The Mauimama issue 31 – Editorial
Breastfeeding can be one of the most beautiful and sweetest human interactions you can ever do. It can also be one of the most challenging if it doesn’t come easy straight away. But we endure, survive and live to continue breastfeeding for years to come. August is breastfeeding awareness month. A month to honor breastfeeding mothers and raise awareness that, if you can, breast is best for your baby’s health and development.
August is also the month of the 2014 primary Elections here on Maui. This is a chance for us to have a voice and try and elect leaders into office who will help make this beautiful island a wonderful place to live and raise our children, and do it in a way that respects the ‘aina.
I love Maui, and after living here for 17 years feel very protective over her. I hope the right stewards get elected who will put the needs of Maui before anything or anyone else. I know you shouldn’t mix politics with pleasure but I have been so inspired by some of these Maui women running for office I am proud I can support them. I truly believe they can make our community stronger and do it with integrity, honor and compassion; things I try and teach my boys everyday.
I hope you have an amazing summer, get out and vote, and have lots of fun enjoying this beautiful place we call home.
