Understanding the sugar chart –
Natural sugar can be a great source of glucose (fuel), but when refined and given in excess, can wreck havoc on the body’s immune system and elevate insulin levels. This in turn can lead to weight gain, high blood pressure and possibly a higher risk for cancer and type II diabetes.
Some children can be more sensitive to sugar, which may affect their behavior, attention span and learning abilities negatively.
Sugar crashes or hypoglycemia can also occur after large intakes of sugar as the body produces more insulin to remove the excess glucose (sugar) from the body. In children this can lead to mood swings, irritability and tiredness.
By understanding the levels of sugars in drinks in the above sugar chart, submitted by Dr. Sonia Gupta, we can help reduce these negative side effects and choose healthier options for ourselves and our children.
