Dear Aunty Tina, I’m 7 months pregnant and I wake up in the middle of the night and then can’t for the life of me get back to sleep. Is there anything I can do?
I’m sorry. Pregnancy insomnia is the worst! It is difficult when your wheels are turning a mile a minute, either from excitement or stress. However, there are a several coping mechanisms I know that have helped lots of mothers. The 7 breaths is a technique that can help bring you back to your center. Stay lying down and focus on your inhalation using seven low slow breaths. Hopefully this will quiet the chatter and help you get back to sleep. If the seven breaths don’t work try slow abdominal breathing for 10 minutes (inhale belly out, exhale belly in) and try, if you can, to shut down your mind. Visualizing closing a door in your mind or saying goodbye to your thoughts can help. If all else fails, read a book, this may help redirect your thoughts.
If you are wired and tired drinking a cup of Sleepy Time tea before going to bed may help. I have known mothers that swear 2 tea bags do the trick nicely. A hypnotherapist visit has also proven very successful. Sleeping position can be important for you to get a good night sleep. Avoid sleeping on your back; laying on your left side is the best position. Invest in a body pillow if you haven’t already, Costco or Wal-Mart normally carry them. Sleep with it long ways, placing it in-between your legs and up along your belly, you will be amazed how comfortable this makes sleeping.
