Teens living in rural communities are more likely to have had sex, are less likely to use contraceptives, and have a higher teen birthrate than teens living in suburban or urban areas. In response to community needs, a number of Planned Parenthood affiliates, including Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and the Hawaiian Islands (PPGNHI), have designed and implemented a new, innovative program called LiFT – Linking Families & Teens.
LiFT is a program that brings teens and their parents together to share family values, strengthen family bonds, and talk about the tough stuff – healthy relationships and sexual health. Studies show that teens who say they have a close relationship with a parent make healthier choices and are less likely to engage in risky behaviors.
LiFT has already received resoundingly positive feedback from participating families: “I hope my daughter makes good decisions, but I know that things won’t always go that way. Hearing all of this information and listening to all of these stories from the group will help me be prepared when my daughter needs my support.”

“My mom and I always fight about me spending time with my boyfriend. After LiFT, we were able to use the skills that we learned to agree on a decision we both felt good about without fighting. It was such a nice change!” – LiFT Teen Participant
LiFT will launch on Maui next month, Saturday, February 25th, 2017. It is a five-hour workshop designed for teens to attend with a parent or guardian. In addition to providing free lunch/snacks and some great prizes, folks can earn cash incentives just for participating – $80 for parents and $110 for teens.
The program involves completing evaluation surveys and participants may be assigned to the LiFT program or the survey-only group. Through enhancing family connection and communication, the program aims to reduce the rates of unintended pregnancy, increase the effective use of contraception, and delay initiation of sexual activity amongst Maui teens.
