Maui Aquarium Whale Sphere

Maui Ocean Center, The Aquarium of Hawaii is adding a new dimension to Maui’s whale season with its new Humpbacks of Hawaii Exhibit & Sphere, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the mystery and migration of Hawaii’s humpback whales. The facility features an interactive exhibit hall preluding to an immersive experience in Hawaii’s first laser-projected 3D sphere theater!

The exhibit hall tells the story of the humpbacks’ nomadic lifestyle and migration routes taken globally, regionally, and within Hawaii, focusing on the fact that it is an animal in constant travel. Guests will learn about the whale’s behaviors at any given point of their migration and the different roles they engage in along this journey. The exhibit content ranges from interactive children games to never-before-seen humpback whale footage displayed on a convex screen. Then, visitors will have the opportunity to enter the Sphere to experience these behaviors in a one-of-a-kind whale encounter.

While Hawaii’s visitors have traditionally witnessed humpback whales from above the ocean’s surface, Maui Ocean Center aims to provide guests with a window into what happens beneath the waves. Humpback whales are brought to life through an underwater virtual experience that utilizes the most advanced systems in lenses and seeming technology. The use of active 3D glasses and 4k imagery generated by multiple laser projects, backed by a dynamic 7.1 surround system, blurs the lines of reality and transports viewers to experience Maui’s humpback whales in their own environment.

The Humpbacks of Hawaii Exhibit & Sphere was created in collaboration with local artisans, marine mammal specialists, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and affiliated organizations. Filmed and produced by Daniel Opitz of Ocean Mind, the whales featured in the Sphere were filmed in Maui waters under the supervision and permits granted by NOAA.

Maui Ocean Center anticipates opening the Humpbacks of Hawaii Exhibit & Sphere by the year’s end just in time for the peak of humpback whale watching season. While the humpback whales will eventually leave for feeding grounds in Alaska, Maui Ocean Center’s new exhibit will preserve their presence year-round for anyone seeking to enjoy the beauty and mystery of one of Hawaii’s most beloved marine animals

For more information, visit or call (808) 270-7000. Minimum age requirement for the Sphere experience is 4 years and up.
