Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) has become a global pandemic that kills more people than HIV alone in the US. My first symptoms came to me as a new mom when little red bumps started spreading on my skin. My physician immediately prescribed me antibiotics. At the time I was breastfeeding my daughter who did not want to detach from me. I was at a Catch 22. Quit breastfeeding in order to take the strong antibiotic and kill this staph infection or continue on with the “least harmful antibiotic”, which I was told would heal this infection.
However, what I wasn’t told is MRSA is a form of resistant bacteria, that is resistant to almost every single antibiotic available. It’s a super bug. Most antibiotics will only wipe out 90% with the remainder lingering in your body, building bio-films. So, when your stress level rises, or diet plummets, or your immune system goes off track, it attacks. After rounds of antibiotics my immune system became compromised and I was sick in bed all the time. I tried seeing different doctors and was told I had everything from eczema to bad hormonal acne. I made big changes to my diet and spent hours cleaning the house trying to kill germs. Yet, the excruciating symptoms of extreme tiredness, red bumps all over my body, difficult breathing and feeling dizzy persisted.
MRSA can be found on your shopping cart, playground, and local beach and pools. This super bug holds no prejudice to its victims age group, gender, or economic class. Not being able to explain the complexity to my little girl why mommy was so sick was the most heart breaking part of this battle by far. The shame of looking in the mirror and no longer seeing the me I once knew. I wasn’t even 30 but felt 90. This weak person was NOT ME and I wanted CHANGE. I am a single parent and it’s my full responsibility to meet all my child’s needs. It wasn’t until I met Dr. Marsha Lowery, ND that my healing process really began. She was the first doctor on Maui I met that truly understood the complexity of this infectious disease and the healing process it requires.
