“Before becoming a client with Malama, I was living a life of insanity; doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results. I was not being honest with my family, friends, or my probation officer. I was living a lie and lying to everyone. If I hadn’t found this program, I would still be in my addiction, unable to get out of the pit of Hell,” recounts Lisa S., a former client at Malama Family Recovery Center in Kahului.
Malama Family Recovery Center is the only agency on Maui that provides a continuum of gender-specific treatment services specifically for pregnant and parenting women in recovery from substance abuse and addiction. Malama is designed to be a non-judgmental, comfortable place where women can privately and confidentially talk about their needs with caring professionals. “Gender specificity in treatment is critical to successful outcomes because women who use/abuse substances share common life experiences, and have needs distinct from their male counterparts,” said Lisa Ponichtera, PhD., Clinical Director. “We also believe in healing the whole family together; we are the only residential treatment program on Maui that allows mothers to have their children with them.”
“Malama has helped to shape me into the strong, virtuous woman that I am today,” Lisa S. continues. “Here I’ve been able to fully incorporate the value of kupono – honesty and integrity – and this has made a huge impact on my life. I was able to graduate from Malama and accomplish my goal of becoming a staff member.
Now I am giving back to an agency that helped to form my foundation today. I want to help lift other women up to be the strong women that they were made to be.” Lisa now works at Malama as a Care Coordinator and Therapeutic Living Program Coordinator, where she helps women with their day-to-day needs in the recovery process.
Malama Family Recovery Center was established in 1999, when local doctors and nurses saw a need to assist pregnant and parenting women suffering from drug and alcohol use, in order to reduce harm to their babies. BabySAFE (Substance Abuse Free Environment) was the first program of the agency; later the organization added a residential substance use treatment facility, a sober living program, and outpatient services. It now serves approximately 160 women and children per year. Malama is part of a tri-agency partnership with Aloha House, Inc., and Maui Youth & Family Services under the umbrella organization of Maui Behavioral Health Resources.
