Teens consistently say that parents – not peers, not partners, not popular culture – most influence their decisions about sex. Research shows that teens who have a close relationship with a parent will be more likely to postpone sexual activity, make healthier choices when it comes to sex, and are less likely to engage in a range of risky behaviors. To promote this important family connection, Planned Parenthood affiliates, including Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and the Hawaiian Islands (PPGNHI), collaborated to design a new, innovative program called LiFT – Linking Families & Teens.
“The LiFT program is a wonderful opportunity for young people, parents and families to build and strengthen our self-esteem, self-worth and self-efficacy. Our daughter feels more confident in having difficult conversations with her peers and with us and we, as parents, feel reassured we are on the ‘right track.’ I encourage all parents, young people and families to make the time, you will not regret it,” said LiFT parent participant.
LiFT brings teens and their parents together to share family values, strengthen family bonds, and talk about the tough stuff – healthy relationships and sexual health. Through enhancing family connection and communication, the program aims to reduce the rates of unintended pregnancy, increase the effective use of contraception, and delay initiation of sexual activity amongst Maui teens.
This program has already had two successful programs in Hawaii, this school year, and the feedback from participating families is resoundingly positive.
LiFT will come to Kahului, Maui on Saturday, May 6th, 2017. It is a five-hour workshop designed for teens to attend with a parent or guardian. In addition to providing free lunch/snacks and some great prizes, folks can earn cash incentives just for participating – up to $80 for parents and $110 for teens. The program involves completing evaluation surveys and participants may be assigned to the LiFT program or the survey-only group.
