Ledum Palustre

L is the twelfth letter of the alphabet in our Mauimama series of ABC’s of homeopathy for mothers and children and is for Ledum Palustre. Ledum Palustre (Ledum or Led.) is a useful first aid homeopathic remedy made from the whole fresh plant or dried twigs of the plant Ledum palustre, known also as wild rosemary.

Ledum is one of the first remedies to consider for acute insect bites and stings, especially where there is inflammation, puffiness and swelling. Ledum can be given routinely after a bite by any animal, poisonous or not, with the Ledum bite better for cold compress and worst for heat.

This remedy is also used for puncture wounds to the palms of the hand or the soles of feet caused by a nail, needle, knife, splinter or thorns. Miranda Castro in her book, homeopathic guides for mother and baby, writes: “If prescribed early, Ledum will prevent sepsis from developing in wounds where the skin is punctured by a sharp, pointed instrument. If a splinter is still in the wound, press gently around it to encourage bleeding and to expel it or give Silica.” Professional advice should be sought if the puncture wound is from dirty instruments, to prevent risk of tetanus.

Ledum is a great remedy for bruises around the eye on the orbital bone, i.e., the classic black eye caused by injury, especially from a blow to the eye, especially where the area maybe bloodshot and the eye may weep.

Rheumatic joint pains may also be helped with Ledum, this is a useful remedy for chronic rheumatism. The pains are worst for heat and better for cold compress and cold bathing. The joint pains can be hot and stiff. The pains may start in the lower limbs, especially in the small joints, and move upwards, from feet to the hands. The joints feel cold but warmth is uncomfortable, with the warmth aggravating the symptoms.

Ledum also has been noted to be successfully used in alcoholism, Dr. James Tyler Kent states: “Ledum counteracts the effects of whisky and takes away the desire for it.”

Ledum Palustre can be purchased at your local health food store like Manna foods or Hawaiian moons. It can be given in 30c potency as a first aid remedy and is definitely a useful remedy to have in your first aid kit.

Please consult your homeopath for homeopathic advice for chronic conditions or see your Doctor if symptoms persist and always seek medical advice when needed. Homeopathy is not intended to replace medical care.

Wishing you all health and happiness this fall.
