I had always heard the enthusiastic group of regulars at Haiku Fuzion Fitness (next to Maui Kombucha) but never dared to disturb the intense workout until my close friend asked a group of girlfriends to join her in a Kettlebell class as a part of her birthday celebration. Yes, on our birthdays we give ourselves the best gift; a tighter body with a side of endorphins!
Thanks to our instructor Tree (she embodies every descriptive word you can think of describing a tree, like uh hum…solid) it was a super fun new workout. I was hooked, but the real confirmation that this class was a winner came the next day in the form of sore muscles. It hurt but in all the right places!!! All those hard to get lady spots like the butt, inner/outer thighs and my tummy were all delightfully sore. Since my first class I have gone about 15 more times and have lost half of that in combined inches. I am on my way, in under a month, to being in the best shape of my entire life. In my opinion Kettlebells offer the fastest and most effective way to change the look and functionality of your body – hands down!
You may be asking, “What the heck are Kettlebells?” The Kettlebell, cannonbell or girya is a cast iron or steel weight (resembling a cannonball with a handle) used to perform and I quote, “ballistic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and fl exibility training.” They were developed in Russia in the 1700s and the Soviet army has been using them ever since as part of their physical training and conditioning programs. Kettlebell exercises are in their nature holistic; therefore they work several muscles simultaneously and may be repeated continuously for several minutes or with short breaks. This is especially fun set to pumping music, which is co-ordinated to the exercises. The combination of exercises makes the workout partially aerobic and more similar to high-intensity interval training rather than to traditional weight lifting.
Yes, we’re moms and we really need to get our workout on in order to stay strong or calm through the storms that sometimes come in our lives with our children in the form of tantrums, hormonal teenagers, and the all too common parent/child power struggle. However, be warned, due to their high repetitions, kettlebell progression should start out slowly to build muscle endurance, support the joints and tendons. You want to be able to walk for the rest of the week!
If you are looking for a “game changer” workout, a great time, uplifting music and people that treat you like family, I totally recommend Fuzion Fitness in Haiku. Just introduce yourself to one of the instructors and enjoy! I look forward to sweating with ya! 😉
