This mountain ridge trail connects Maunalei Arboretum to the Kapalua Resort (it also ends at D.T Fleming Beach Park). It offers great views of Mokupe‘a and Honokahua Gulches, and gives us access to trails on land that was once used to cultivate coffee and pineapple during the Honolua Ranch era.
To get to the trail from the mauna (mountain side) you need to take a shuttle from the Kapalua Village Center which is located at 2000 Village road in-between the Ritz Carlton and Kapalua Golf Academy to the Maunalei Arboretum. You will need to contact the Resort Shuttle (free service) to reserve a seat, which is limited at 808-665-9110. There is free parking and very nice bathrooms at the center.
Shuttle times for Maunalei Arboretum are at 9:30 am, 11:30 am and 1:30 pm.
The shuttle (which has to drive through a gated community of the rich and famous) takes about 10 minutes to take you up to the trailhead. At the trailhead (where the van drops off) there is a port-a-potty and pavilion with picnic table and a sign with a map – take a picture of the map!
After following the trail head in follow the arrow signs for the Honolua Ridge trail (You will go through a gate). Once at the top of the Honolua Ridge trail you will start the Mahana Ridge trail that will begin to descend down the mountain.
If you start at the makai (ocean side) and hike up the mountain the trail starts at the Kapulua Village center or next to the preschool at D.T Fleming beach park (you will see the trail head opening across from the parking lot). If you hike up you can catch the Resort Shuttle back at the trail head of the Maunalei Arbetum (call in advance to reserve your seat).
Shuttle times from Maunalei Arboretum to the Kapalua Village Center are 9:50 am, 11:50 am and 1:50 pm.
With your keiki this is a long hike (over 7 miles), so don’t forget to bring plenty of water, sunscreen and snacks and a baby carrier if they are toddlers.
