Waikamoi Nature Trail
Hike Category: Hikes
-
About 20 minutes outside Haiku on the road to Hana there is a sweet little hike on the Waikamoi Trail. The trail is a total of 0.8 miles if you do the loop-trail alone and about a mile and a half if you do the extension.
The hike is a little over half-mile past mile marker 9 on the Hana Highway. Keep your eyes open for the parking lot (mauka) to the Waikamoi Ridge Forest Trail and Overlook. It is easy to miss due to the fact it’s around a bend in the road. After parking in the often crowded lot, head up to the open area to your left to a small overlook with picnic shelters ( a good place to have lunch) and the Waikamoi trail head.
The hike takes about 30 minutes to an hour here depending on which trails you hike. The main loop is well maintained with an extension at the top of the loop with overgrown roots, which are fun for the little ones to climb over. There are a few plaques throughout the trail identifying some of the flora. It is steep to go up and then steep to go down but a good exercise and a little adventure for the little ones.
If it has been rainy it is muddy.
You can always call in on the Bamboo forest or twin Falls to make a day of hiking on your way home.
