Sew Special Maui

Do you remember the lockdown that began in March 2020? The recollections of everyone who experienced this event on Maui will forever be ingrained in our collective memory.  Whoever imagined that during our lifetime we would experience a global health pandemic that impacted each and every aspect of life as we knew it? The restrictions and closures forced us all to become that much more resourceful and savvy as the daily routines we took for granted were upended and disrupted.

One of the many compelling life-during-lockdown stories emerged at the Huntley family’s Sew Special store. As owner Uncle Roy Huntley tells it, he found himself at the beginning of the lockdown toiling in isolation, busily catching up on the backlog of sewing machine repairs and servicing. Suddenly the phone started ringing off the hook. Each caller was frantically looking for two things: fabric and elastic. What would bring about such a request? Cloth masks!

However, due to the Maui County Public Health Emergency Rules, the store was officially closed. Due to the overwhelming demand from the community for mask-making materials, the Huntleys contacted the Mayor’s office. Understanding the gravity of the situation, the store was deemed an essential business. As a cascade of orders flowed in by phone and online, family members and employees quickly formed a socially-distanced assembly line inside the store to fulfill each request. Customers picked up their orders outside at the store’s loading dock.

Fast forward to the present, and the front doors are once again wide open. Established in 1978 by Barbara and Roy Huntley, Sew Special is one of the original tenants at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Shopping Center. Uncle Roy credits the store’s survival to its ability to provide good customer service and reliability.
