The public is cordially invited to a Grand Opening Celebration of the Kalakupua Playground, otherwise known as Giggle Hill Playground, at the 4th Marine Division Memorial Park in Haiku on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 10am. Seating will begin at 9:45am.
Mayor Alan Arakawa will be presenting a proclamation. Speakers include Council Chair Mike White, Haiku Community Association President Lucienne De Naie. Playground Founder Karen Cooper, Haiku Community Association Playground Chair Jennifer Livingston, volunteers and donors will be honored. Maui singer Nara Boone will provide entertainment, and light refreshments will be served.
Everyone is welcome to bring a picnic lunch and stay to play on the playground after the ceremony.
The playground was built in 2004 under the direction of Karen Cooper and River Sussman. It was a large community effort including residents from all over Maui. It was closed in 2012 due to disrepair.
“For the past three years a volunteer committee, lead by Jennifer Livingston and supported by the Haiku Community Association, has been working to restore the Kalakupua Playground,” said Tim Wolfe, Haiku Community Association Treasurer. “Through their efforts, the playground is now open again and ready for Maui families to enjoy.”
