Dear Aunty Tina, I am 7 months pregnant and am getting terribly painful leg cramps at night. Is there anything I can do to prevent them?
Most women I know get these leg cramps one time or the other and more often than not while sleeping in bed. It can be paralyzing but please be assured it’s normal. From my experience you can help minimize these cramps by making sure you are consuming enough Magnesium and Calcium in your diet. Magnesium-rich foods include whole grains, beans, dried fruits, nuts and seeds while Calcium-rich foods include dairy products, kale, tahini paste, figs, and nuts.
I also encourage taking supplements but please note that if you take them the same time as your Iron supplements they won’t work. You may be better taking your Iron in the morning and then liquid capsules of Cal/Mag at night before going to bed. I also encourage Vitamin E capsules too but please refer to your health practitioner before taking anything new.
Exercise may also help, I always try and encourage nice long walks and remember to stay hydrated. If your pee is dark yellow it may mean you are not getting enough water. It may also be dark due to the B Vitamins you may be taking so don’t be alarmed if you know you are drinking lots of water.
