Common Ground Collective (CGC) is a Maui-based nonprofit organization that is working hard to promote sustainable agriculture and working to increase food security and economic opportunities for our Maui community. One of CGC’s programs is the Foster Farming Harvest Program, where they go out and harvest backyard produce for local residents and distribute that food out to the community in need.
Landowners get to choose whether they want to donate or sell their produce. There is no charge for donated harvests and landowners receive a tax-deductible donation receipt for their produce, which is then donated to local community organizations that work to feed the Maui’s food insecure, including local families, houseless individuals, seniors, and at-risk youth. If landowners decide to sell the produce, CGC charges a 40% of sales service charge to help cover their costs and support their programs. Sales of produce are dependent on the market for the produce and/or the quality.
Since this small grassroots nonprofit began harvesting in 2019, they have reaped over 34,000 lbs of produce that would have otherwise rotted and of that, have managed to donate more than 22,000 lbs of food to help feed our residents in need. The rest of the 12,000 plus pounds has been sold to small local businesses to help push out imports and put money back into the pockets of the residents who they harvest for. In addition to the Harvesting program, they also organize community food bag giveaways, help local farms with community volunteer workdays and work to promote education and awareness about the local food system.
