Mauimama front cover 2018

Another year has flown by. I don’t know whether having kids accelerates time, or whether it is the fact that life is so full with them in it, but time seems to be stampeding through without any thought of pausing or slowing down.

In Chinese astrology 2018 is the year of the Earth Dog. This will hopefully be a lucky year including many side dishes of positive change (it is interesting to note that many revolutions have began in dog years). “One must remember that the Chinese zodiac sign of the Dog, symbol of intelligence and protection, can also turn the year 2018 into a sensitive period, during which activists and students, but also ordinary citizens, feeling deprived of hope and socially excluded, won’t hesitate to demand radical changes to their life conditions, and to preserve the future of their children.” Karma Weather.

The new Chinese Year begins on February 16th 2018 and will end on February 4th 2019.

With the beginning of a new year comes opportunities to change and start new revolutions… I mean resolutions. It is a time to recognise our strengths and let go of things that don’t serve us. Communication is often the key, (see page 4) and not just with how we parent, but how we interact in all our relationships.

As women a wave of empowerment is flowing through the collective. We are speaking out and finally being heard by open ears and hearts. We are teaching our children to respect one another and helping to create a new future. There is great power in being a mother, (see page 2) and there can be great power in being a woman.

“Nevertheless, she persisted” is the theme of the Women in Excellence Awards this year, (see page 6). If you know any woman who should be nominated, don’t hesitate to put their name in. By honoring and supporting each other we are making our community that much stronger. Many of us have endured struggles along the way, encountering all kinds of discrimination in the work place and in life, but we pick ourselves up and keep on going. It is important to understand our rights, (see page 29) and also to believe in ourselves, (see page 28). We are worthy.

Thank you for picking up The Mauimama. I hope it helps support you and I wish you and your family a very happy and loving New Year!
