Pacific Birth Collective is pleased to announce that they are bringing the Positive Birth Movement to Maui!
Founded in the UK, by Milli Hill, a mother, writer and campaigner, The Positive Birth Movement is a grassroots movement, spreading positivity about childbirth via a global network of free Positive Birth groups, linked up by social media. There are now over 300 groups around the world hosting monthly meetings, and thousands of people tuning in to the Positive Birth Movement social media. The simple, overall philosophy is that every woman deserves a positive birth. This includes the following:
· Women and families are where they want to be
· Choices are informed by reality not fear
· Mothers are empowered and enriched
· Memories are warm and proud
Pacific Birth Collective and the Positive Birth Movement hold the birth experience to be of fundamental importance to mothers, fathers, babies, families and society, and wish to support families in having an experience they can be proud of. In our free monthly meetings, Positive Birth Maui aims to:
· Challenge the culture of negativity and fear that exists around birth
· Share positive birth experiences, as well as experiences where the family made difficult but ultimately positive choices
· Share information about choices and rights in childbirth
· Encourage women to raise their expectations of childbirth
Positive Birth Movement groups are different from “birth classes”. The groups are ‘discussion groups’. Some people refer to this kind of group as ‘peer to peer’, meaning that everyone in the group is considered equal. This breaks down the power dynamic between ‘expert’ and ‘pregnant woman’, which can, unfortunately, contribute to a disempowered family. The presence of a prepared Positive Birth Maui Facilitator helps to makes it easy for people to come together and share ideas, thoughts, feelings and information. Each month has a theme to help stimulate conversation. It is not the Facilitator’s role to teach or give specific advice; regardless of her background or expertise. In the Positive Birth Maui group she is the Facilitator and nothing else (well, she’s also the one who brings the cake!).
All are invited; pregnant families, postpartum families, experienced families, birth support people, and anyone who wants to engage in thoughtful and positive conversations about birth! We hope to be starting free monthly meetings in August and rotate locations around the island. For more information about Positive Birth Maui visit positivebirthmovementmaui.weebly.com/
