There is a trend sweeping the nation, which goes against everything our culture has glamorized and strived to maintain for at least the last fifty years. It’s called streamlining, a.k.a. downsizing, a.k.a minimalism, a.k.a getting organized.
In modern life, we are expected to do it all. Many of us are living on overdrive, with information overload, cluttered homes, and over scheduled days. This can actually cause us to live in a state of stress or even depression. Statistics show that the simple process of creating an organized lifestyle can help cure this modern predicament and make family life easier and happier.
A study by UCLA’s Center on Everyday Lives and Families (CELF) found the relationship between thirty-two California families and the clutter in their homes as follows:
• Clutter not only makes our homes look messy, it can also make us feel bad.
• Clutter can have a profound affect on our mood and self-esteem – CELF’s anthropologists, social scientists, and archaeologists found a link between high cortisol (stress hormone) levels in female home owners and a high density of household objects: The more stuff, the more stress women feel.
Furthermore, reported statistics from The National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) say that we spend one year of our lives looking for lost items and eighty percent of what we file never gets looked at again! Getting rid of clutter eliminates forty percent of housework in an average home. Eighty per cent of the clutter in homes is a result of disorganization, not lack of space!
Having children in the house can make this clutter multiply and feel like a living nightmare. If you are not constantly cleaning up or have exceedingly tidy children, your house can quickly get inundated with toys, clothes, leftover food, and whatever else the kids bring in or leave behind. However, with a little organization, the situation can get better.
Five Reasons to get organized:
1. Helps cure depression
2. Helps reduce stress
3. Helps you be more successful
4. Gives you more time
5. Helps you live a life of balance, harmony, ease, and beauty
As a professional organizer, one of my goals is to work with therapists to help people who are suffering from chronic stress and depression. From experience, I have seen that in as little as 20 hours of comprehensive streamlining, clients show a drastic improvement in life quality.
To help the “do it yourself” types, I will be hosting a Dream Life Design workshop in the fall, see my website www.organize.life for details, where I will teach the power, art, and science of organization.
You can transform your family’s life with a little know-how. I strongly believe that once you create an organized lifestyle, everything quickly falls into place and miracles happen. I do specialize in lifestyle make-overs, so if you can’t make the workshop and do need the motivation and help, I love transforming lives by getting people on the right track to creating a balanced lifestyle the whole family can enjoy.
