“Yoga is an ancient science designed to liberate the mind.” – MC Yogi. Imagine yourself seated in complete freedom; no one to be, nowhere to go, nothing to do. As your mind relaxes into this space, its only focus is on breath, and then breath with movement. A union has been created within that allows you to flow through your practice with your heart projecting its light out into the world. It is here that love is cultivated, and its reach is boundless.
That is the feeling I get from yoga and why I created the Maui Community Yoga (MCY) project. While yoga is a multifaceted practice with its eight limb path, MCY’s main focus is on the Asana, or yoga postures. MCY is a traveling yoga studio that offers free classes to anyone who is willing and able to show up on their mat, regardless of their yoga experience. There are two FREE classes offered every week at varying times so that people with all different schedules can practice. I encourage all moms to come, whether you are able to come by yourself or have your children in tow. Currently all classes are being held at the 4th Marine Division Memorial Park a.k.a. Giggle Hill in Haiku until the New Year, when classes will also be held in Kihei, Kahului and Pukalani. Schedules are frequently posted on Facebook, Instagram and our website.
What new and practiced yogis alike can expect when coming to an MCY class is a purposefully sequenced, 60 minute vinyasa flow where I will demonstrate and assist in the postures while clearly cueing breath and body movement. I incorporate chanting, music and hints of yogic philosophy and meditation to enrich the practice and help settle the mind. An exciting addition for some of the classes will be the integration of Young Living Oils administered by Mira Celeste Nissim throughout the practice to help activate and balance the chakras. Classes where oils are applied will be more chakra focused.
I believe it is crucial for us all to have a practice in our lives, a space where we can go deeper and evolve continuously. It is my hope that Maui Community Yoga can help create that space for people who are looking to initiate, rekindle or expand their yoga practice. Again, classes are offered FREE to the community. If you or local companies you know of are aligned with this project, we are seeking great sponsors and in this season of giving donations are happily accepted through www.mauicommunityyoga.org or generosity.com. Parents, we work really hard, this is a great gift you can give to yourself, not only for the 60 minutes, but for days after. Hope to see you on your mat!
