Glyphosate, a chemical herbicide, was registered in 1974 and approved for market sales in 1996. “Roundup” manufactured by Monsanto was the new super weed killer and use increased 300 fold. It was sold everywhere from home improvement stores and supermarkets. However, this past month Mom’s Across America broke the news that Round-up will no longer be sold at Costco and for good reason.
In 2015 the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IRAC) came straight out and stated that glyphosate was a possible carcinogen. Recently one man in California won an award of $238 million (later reduced to $78 million after Monsanto challenged) when the court determined that his cancer was due to exposure to glyphosate, while, the University of Washington just this February released a study which showed that you are 41% more likely to get cancer if you have high levels of glyphosate in your system.
So, what’s it in and what does it do to us? I encourage you to Google it. The list is long and scary. It is in oatmeal, baby food, cereals, vaccines, and tampons. These are all things which speak to the health of women and their children. For babies it can mean shorter birth length and weight, reduced brain circumference, lower I.Q’s and recently established premature birth. For the mother it can mean endometriosis, polycystic ovary disease (PCOD), premature ovarian failure, uterine fibroids, fertility problems, breast cancer and obesity.
This all sounds fatalist I know, but don’t get sad or angry get to making some basic changes. Women and children alike can eliminate the glyphosate in their urine with switching to an all organic diet in just 4 days! Avoid GMO foods, especially soybean products, corn products and meats. Look for labels like Non-GMO Project, USDA Organic and Glyphosate Free labels. Also take a look at your feminine products. There are many choices of organic cotton tampons, pads and menstrual cups.
SHAKA is pleased to announce you will be able to get your urine tested for glyphosate and twelve other “organophosphates” here on Maui. SHAKA Movement will be conducting research (approved by an independent board) on the amounts of these substances in the Maui population. The cost is just $80 with SHAKA and its generous donors supplying tests for free to those in the Kihei area closest to the test fields and old cane fields. Please sign-up at http://theshakamovement.com if you wish to buy the test or if you live in any of the the above areas and wish to be tested. Please reach out to SHAKA Movement if you have any questions or concerns via our website. We look forward to hearing from you.
The SHAKA Movement fosters a spirited “Right-to-Environmental and Community Health” platform that directly addresses health, land and legal implications in state of Hawaii. Look out for their new ads on the radio, social media, e-mail, and local newspapers for their events at which samples will be collected. www.theshakamovement.com
