  • MEO Head Start is a federally funded program designed to support the entire family.  Services are focused on providing quality early childhood educational services to preschool aged children.  In addition, services are also provided to the family via support to ensure that basic needs are met, and in setting family goals established by parents.  Head Start promotes comprehensive services in content areas of Education, Health, Nutrition, Oral Health, Mental Health, Family Engagement, and in support of children certified with Special Needs.

Qualifications to participate in this program:  MEO Head Start services are available for families that qualify via the Federal Income Poverty Guidelines for the State of Hawaii established annually.  Children that are certified as meeting the criteria for Special Education services through the Department of Education are also eligible for services.  Children may be categorically eligible by meeting specific criteria including:  lack of shelter / homeless; foster child; family receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).  Services are provided at no cost to qualifying families.

They have 13 centers on Maui, 2 on Moloka’i, and a partnership on Lana’i; and offer both full and part-day center options. Services include health, oral health, nutrition, social, early childhood education, special needs (coordinated with the Department of Education), family involvement & training, and mental health & transition.

Parents are highly involved in shared decision making within the program, including curriculum, program development and individualized goals for their child. They regard parents as their child’s first teacher and work in close partnership with the family.
