Belladonna is our second remedy in The Mauimama’s series, ABC’s of Homeopathy for Acute Home Healthcare for you and your family. Long known to be a poisonous perennial plant, Belladonna belongs to the deadly nightshade family, and grows in the shady areas of Central and Southern Europe.
We need to go back to the 16th Century in Italy where the ladies would use drops of the Belladonna sap to dilate their pupils and make their eyes sparkle more beautifully to find the source of the name Belladonna, which is Italian for “beautiful lady”.
When used as a homeopathic remedy we have a medicine of great use to mothers and children, as it can be used to reduce inflammation and fever.
The breastfeeding mother can find Belladonna helpful when the milk first ‘comes in’ on the third day after the baby is born. This can be a time when the breasts may become engorged, red, hard, painful and throbbing. You will know particularly if Belladonna is the remedy to use if you notice red streaks radiating out from the nipple.
Belladonna Acute symptoms begin suddenly and are intense with painful throbbing, inflammation, infection, redness, heat and fever. There can be great restlessness with the pain which is often experienced more on the right side and at night with sleeplessness.
We can see this in teething symptoms. Belladonna can be successful in relieving discomfort where there is teething in children with fever, red swollen cheeks and experiencing intense pain.
Belladonna is great for colds which start suddenly, fever and throbbing ear pain, sore throat with redness and swelling of the tonsils. It is especially effective for Tonsillitis.
Living on Maui Belladonna is useful in sunstroke, where there is much heat, fever and throbbing intense headache from exposure to the sun.
Childhood illnesses like chicken pox, measles and mumps can use Belladonna, where there are the general, mental and emotional symptoms of Belladonna. With chicken pox we see fever and headache, with measles we see a sudden onset of a rash, which is also hot and itchy with fever, accompanied with cough and eye inflammation, while with mumps the symptoms we see are painful swollen glands with sudden onset worst on the right side with fever headache and sore throat.
Miranda Castro writes in her book, The Complete Homeopathy Handbook, “In many infections a fever is an essential part of the healing process and are often underestimated partly because they evoke fear through lack of understanding of their purpose. A fever is helpful and necessary, whether associated with a cold or more serious ‘childhood illness’.” Miranda goes onto writes, “The fever in Belladonna has symptoms of heat alternating with chills and burning, without sweating. The patient radiates heat, especially from the head although she may feel the limbs are cold. The skin may be alternatively dry and moist and if there is sweat it will be on those parts of the body that are covered with clothes. There will often be no thirst with the fever.”
NOTE: The average normal temperature in a healthy human is 98.6 °F. Fevers need to be handled very carefully and medical care must be sought especially in babies under 6 months. If an older baby has a fever of over 103.5°F and doesn’t respond to sponging or homeopathic care within 24 hours or if a person of any age has a fever of 105 °F seeking medical care is very important. Homeopathy maybe used while waiting for the medical care but does not replace medical care. Always seek medical advice from your qualified Homeopath and Doctor if a fever persist and does not respond to home care.
Belladonna 30c can be purchased from the health food store like Mana foods or Hawaiian Moons and higher potencies need to be ordered and prescribed by your homeopath.
